SwapDrive Users Can Now Distribute Large Files up to 75 MB using a Web Browser
Washington, D.C. - Feb. 20, 2001 - SwapDrive, a provider of online storage and file management software and services, today announced its purchase of WhaleMail, Inc., a Reston, Virginia-based provider of online file delivery and storage. Under terms of the agreement, SwapDrive will acquire the company, its technology and its customer base of more than 50,000 users. John Burton, managing director of Updata Advisors, Inc., has also joined the SwapDrive board of directors as a result of the acquisition.
WhaleMail's unique technology will offer an instantaneous, reliable and efficient method for SwapDrive users to electronically distribute large files to an email address simply using a Web browser. Once integrated into the SwapDrive Corporate Web, the WhaleMail functionality will eliminate the time and costs associated with FTP, compressing a file or shipping disk media through an expensive courier service.
The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) utilizes DesignPACK within its global organization, which facilitates excellence through the services and support it offers its more than 1,100 construction manager members. "Time is money for construction managers, so having an efficient Internet-based file access and sharing system in place is crucial to running a successful construction project," says Bruce D'Agostino, executive director of the CMAA. "When we made the decision to outsource file management and data storage, and offer these services to our members, we chose SwapDrive over other vendors because of its simplicity, reliability and the faith we have in its security."
Charlie Perla, AIA, registered architect and principal of DMS Perla, an architecture consulting firm that uses SwapDrive's services, receives positive feedback from his clients. "The most exciting benefit for my clients is that they can look at the same design documents in near real-time, allowing for a true collaborative environment. The traditional method of reviewing and approving documents was extremely cumbersome because of geographic limitations, but now my clients and I have a quick and easy way to view CAD drawings. Even the most non-technical user can benefit from using DesignPACK."
"The traditional method of using FTP to send large files is a cumbersome and unreliable process that is dependent on a remote host server to transmit data. Through WhaleMail's technology, users are afforded easy and secure access to a virtual hard drive via the Internet to transfer and download files as large as 75 MB - in almost real time," said Marc Wallace, CEO of SwapDrive. "Since SwapDrive customers are business users who can benefit from a reliable and secure method of data transfer, we knew WhaleMail would be an excellent fit for the SwapDrive Corporate Web."
Using their SwapDrive account, customers will be able to deliver oversized files to any email address. Recipients will then receive direct links to virtually stored data in place of a file attachment which risks corruption during transfer or may be too large for transmission. The WhaleMail technology saves space on a user's hard drive or company mail server by eliminating the use of memory capacity by large files, such as graphics, engineering drawings or PowerPoint presentations.
"Because many of WhaleMail's customers are engineers and designers who must share and collaborate on CAD documents, time is of the essence. Constantly emailing very large documents takes a lot of time and server bandwidth," added Wallace. "WhaleMail customers can rest assured that we will provide the same high quality of service as they previously experienced and also benefit from the document sharing and redlining capabilities that we recently added to the Corporate Web service in our DesignPACK solution."
SwapDrive's Corporate Web The SwapDrive Corporate Web is a secure, Internet-based service offering that facilitates file access, sharing and collaboration among an enterprise's mobile, global workforce. The service provides companies with a cost-effective alternative or complement to establishing, maintaining and supporting in-house storage systems by enabling file access and sharing from any Web-enabled computer, without any client software. The Corporate Web also allows a company to increase the value-add of its core competencies by outsourcing storage and file management services, thereby reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of its storage network. Companies that have already made significant investments in their in-house storage infrastructure can utilize the Corporate Web to develop and manage an online storage initiative.
